Saturday’s Selections from Glorious Goodwood & Galway Races (30/07/22)

Saturday’s card features a number of competitive handicaps, with the valuable Stewards’ Cup taking centre stage.

The fillies and mares are also on show in the Group Two Lillie Langtry Stakes, as Emily Dickinson and Sea La Rosa both battle it out at the head of the market.

There’s also plenty of action at Galway in both disciplines, with two hurdle races opening the card.

GOODWOOD SELECTIONS

1:40pm – Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (Class 2)

Lethal Levi 5/4 K R Burke, Pierre Louis Jamin (3)

The three-year-old gelding should be winning this contest off a mark of 85.

He earned a career-high 100 rating for his recent Newmarket success and has 3lbs claimer Pierre-Louis Jamin aboard.

It’s difficult to see him being beaten here.

2:10pm – Class 2 Handicap

Bague D’Or 11/2Chris Wall, Neil Callan

Bidding for a hat-trick of wins, this gelding has shown plenty of progression in recent months.

He has thrived since stepping up in trip, and he could still be open to further improvement.

2:45pm – Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2)

Emily Dickinson 2/1 A P O’Brien, Ryan Moore

An exciting filly represents Ballydoyle in this Group Two contest.

The well-bred daughter of Dubawi is out of Montjeu mare Chicquita, who won the Irish Oaks in 2013.

Emily Dickinson has been tried over 1m6f, narrowly failing at Leopardstown in a Group Three, finishing behind 107-rated Rosscarberry.

There is plenty to like about this promising filly and this challenge should suit.

3:20pm – Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2)

Popmaster 12/1 (EW – 8 places) Ed Walker, Tom Marquand

Zargun 66/1 (EW – 8 places)Scott Dixon, J F Egan

An extremely tough race to predict, there are a number of useful types in the field, and many who could be in with a chance.

Luck will be an important factor in this race, and although there are many who made the shortlist, Popmaster and Zargun are two to consider at the prices.

The former has finished second in his last two runs, including last time out in a big field at Royal Ascot.

In the Wokingham Stakes he finished three-quarters-of-a-length behind Rohaan, ahead of Mr Wagyu, Summerghand and First Folio who all compete in this.

There were a number of other rivals in behind that day too, and if able to replicate that form he should be in with a chance.

Zargun is available at a massive price as he has been disappointing of late.

However, he finished second in a competitive handicap earlier in the season, and may well outrun his odds if getting a good run of things here.

GALWAY SELECTIONS

2:30pm Handicap Hurdle (Grade B)

The Little Yank – John Patrick Ryan, Mr H C Swan (7)

An old favourite, the seven-year-old gelding has been in the notebook for years, often outrunning his odds, often overlooked, and always giving his all.

Earlier this year he finished third in a Grade B Handicap over hurdles, at odds of 80/1, selected on The Conditional each-way at 100/1.

This contest appears to be suited to him, over a trip he’ll enjoy.

The conditions could be slightly softer than ideal, but he has form on soft ground in the past, and often performs well on a yielding surface.

With 6 places widely available, and 7 places with one firm, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see The Little Yank snatch a place at decent odds.

Another to consider in the race is Hallowed Star, a seven-year-old son of Sea The Stars ridden by Rachael Blackmore.

He will need to prove he stays the trip but could be fairly well-treated at the weights and is open to further improvement.

Molly Wedger is a fine mare who often makes the frame and can also outrun her odds.

She is one to watch from an each-way angle.
